I think Allies are fair IF AND ONLY IF they game is named 2v2 or 4v4 or 3v3 (you know, starting from the beginning ;) )

It's a war game, it's not meant to be fair. If players want to ally then sobeit. Just go down fighting.

IMO, allies are fine if you want to play as such, if these conditions are met:
1. By announcing it before the game.
2. The game host is allowing such.

Otherwise, allies blow. Forming an alliance in the game generally ruins the game-play. If the alliance is unspoken and formed before or during game-start, this will almost assure at least one of the two allies a finish. How is that fair for the other players who do not ally, and know nothing of the alliance? It's not. For this, if I know or feel someone is allied, they usually are my immediate focus, to rid them from the game asap.

However, it is understandable when a player becomes of over-bearing size, that all other players attack them. It's natural, for survival. I expect when I reach a certain size, this is going to be the case. In this light, it is sometimes smarter to build up troops and reserves before making that leap to the almighty. However, if I am unsuccessful, it's terrible when the "allies" do not stop being allies when one or more become the almighty, and instead wipe me out and draw. I dislike that very much. If you were going to "ally" to take out the big guy, why not break the alliance when another starts getting too big?

For these reasons, in general I do not ally or "ally". Even when a player reaches a certain large size and all others are attacking them, I often will not attack them if I can attack another. Only if I stand a chance of winning still, I probably will attack them. If I do not, I generally won't.

So far the points for alliances mentioned are:
-It can help as support for new people on this game
-It a balance a one-sided game
-It can sometimes be fun
-It can be seen as a strategy

And the points against alliances mentioned are:
-It can mostly cause draws which some people find irritating
-It can ruin the game play
-It can be unfair .e.g. 2 strong players against 1 weak player
-It can be seen as bullying if repetitious gangs are made against one person just to torment them
-It has been known to cause troublemakers
-It can be used by a greedy person to get exp, rating points and shards
