About the leapyear thing... that was actually calculated in conversions...

Also, as for timezones, if you truly believed in this (which I don't) you would assume it would go by the timezone the Mayan people lived in, not the first zone to enter that date.

As for the question about their abilities failing to keep them alive, they were mainly wiped by disease rather than explorers, and that would be harder to prevent.
