I was trying to find but don't see anywhere.
Do the races soldiers, robots, elementals, pirates, and ninjas have any special abilities? I'm looking to buy one possibly but if they don't do anything, I'd rather save my shards for something more worth while than just a different skin.

If I were you, I'd spend the shards on a map pack or Premium first, they are more satisfying then races.

I'd definitely go for premium. Can you get lifetime premium from shards?

Yep, I bought 3 month premium account and I'm not sure I will be able to have enough shards to buy another when it ends.
