Well, actually I think our 2 answers complete each other. A species that cannot adapt won't survive, no matter how many babies they make. But indeed, even a very adapt species who don't make enough offsprings won't survive for long.

Not wolves, werewolves. And there are fewer wolves... they lose habitats and get hunted...
Hmm... be terrible if one day, I got on this site and someone asked me what a wolf was and my answer started with 'you see, when I was a kid...'
