He was 82, and had 4 blocked coronary arteries. He wasn't exactly going to live long.

Really? They won't be built for years yet. The average age for his generation to live would've been around 70/75, so he did well. And 1 blocked coronary artery is very, very serious, let alone 4 of them. The heart surgery to unblock them would have given around a 40% chance of death, coincidentally, the surgery killed him.
