I believe the two most logical options would be either to purchase Santas, or the first upgrade.

I would get the first upgrade as your first purchase.
Also, I am lvl 36 now.

I'd advise not getting Santas for awhile. Get the first 2 upgrades and either Reptiles or Arachnids first but in no particular order.

As far as shard purchases, I recommend the following order:

1) 1st upgrade
2) One decent race ( I recommend werewolfs, arachnids, reptiles, or undead)
3) 2nd upgrade
4) Here it depends on what race you chose - If it is undead you buy boosts, otherwise skip to step 5)
5) 3rd upgrade
6) 4th upgrade
7) Boosts

If at any point you can get coins then with your coins as early as possible:

1) Lifetime Premium!
