My view is one space for S, two for M, three for L, and four for XL+.
Add another if it's borders.
The exception is if it's impossible or would seriously make it harder to play if you didn't (like custom maps designed with everything close).

I've seen some xxl maps that are crap for space, but you agree Autumnwolf17 when the players have a space of at least one unit its not trolling.

Depends on the player's options. If they are limited, they may have to spawn closer. If the map is big, it's kind of trolling if you're too close.
