Perhaps there could be central areas that give some kind of bonus to whoever occupies them. Perhaps that territory has +25% defense, or counts a 3 terriories for the purposes of calculating reinforcements. It could also function as an objective, where the first team to hold it for 5 consecutive turns wins the game. Either way, this could add more strategic depth as the players will have something tangible to go after and capture.

I planned from beginning to add some special regions, but I never give it much thought as there are some more important issues that I need to address first. But your idea seems interesting, I will think about it
