Just throwing it out there... How about letting players make races? Example:
Choose A Name: Bird
Points Left to Distribute: 0/20
Strength: 5
Defense: 15
Bonus:

----------------------------------------
|+10% chance of killing the enemy|
----------------------------------------

+25% chance of killing enemy when they have lower number of units

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so on.
