The Animals

Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963, when Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line-up was Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). The Animals moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their signature song and transatlantic No.1 hit single, "The House of the Rising Sun", as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get out of This Place", "It's My Life", "I'm Crying" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-oriented album material. They were known in the US as part of the British Invasion.

The Animals underwent numerous personnel changes in the mid-1960s and suffered from poor business management. Under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals, the much-changed act moved to California and achieved commercial success as a psychedelic and hard rock band with hits like "San Franciscan Nights", "When I Was Young" and "Sky Pilot", before disbanding at the end of the decade. Altogether, the group had ten Top Twenty hits in both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100. The original lineup had brief comebacks in 1975 and 1983. There have been several partial regroupings of the original era members since then under various names. The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Keith West - Excerpt from a Teenage Opera
Image
https://youtu.be/ENblHOxi1c4 (1967)

"Excerpt from 'A Teenage Opera'" (also known as "Grocer Jack") is a 1967 single by Keith West, produced by Mark Wirtz. It was a big hit in Europe, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The single was part of a bigger "A Teenage Opera" project. According to Mark Wirtz, the song comes from a dream he had about an ageing door-to-door grocer named Jack in a small, turn of the century village, who was as mocked by the children as he was taken for granted by the town folk. When Jack unexpectedly died, the town folk reacted with anger about the inconvenience of now having to be self reliant about their staple provision, while the children were heartbroken, in truth having loved and appreciated Jack all the while.

"Trains and Boats and Planes". Billy J Kramer and the Dakota's had this hit single in in 1965 which charted 12th in the UK and 47th on the US Pop charts. The song was composed by Burt Bacharach who composed songs such as "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", "I Say a Little Prayer" and many more awesome hits.

Gilbert O`Sullivan - Clair

He was born Raymond Edward O'Sullivan in Cork Road, Waterford, Ireland. In 1953, aged 7, his family moved to Battersea, London and aged 8 to Swindon, Wiltshire, England. He attended St Joseph's and the Swindon College of Art, where he briefly played drums in a band called Rick's Blues, founded by Rick Davies (who later founded Supertramp) and where he developed his lifelong interests in music and art. According to a 1972 interview with O'Sullivan, Davies taught him how to play both drums and piano. Other semi-professional bands he played with while at college include The Doodles and The Prefects. At the end of 1970, O'Sullivan achieved his first UK Top 10 hit with "Nothing Rhymed", which also reached No. 1 in the Netherlands. Subsequent hits followed including "Underneath The Blanket Go" (which also reached No. 1 in the Netherlands), "We Will" and "No Matter How I Try". O'Sullivan released his debut album, Himself, in 1971.

In 1972 O'Sullivan reached international stardom with "Alone Again (Naturally)", which reached No. 3 in UK; No. 1 in the US, spending six non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and selling nearly two million copies; No.1 in Canada for 2 weeks (13 weeks in the Top 40) . O'Sullivan followed "Alone" with "Clair" (1972, from the album Back to Front). The single reached No. 2 in the United States on the Hot 100 and No. 1 in the UK and Canada (14 weeks in the Canadian Top 40). O'Sullivan's disc sales exceeded ten million in 1972 and made him the top star of the year. O'Sullivan's success led to him taking part in the BBC's anniversary programme Fifty Years of Music in November 1972.

The Beatles

[i] The Beatles were an English rock band, founded 1957 and broke up 1970. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways.
In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as the group's music grew in sophistication, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions. The Beatles are the best-selling act in history. A short 1963 documentation is https://youtu.be/mLT1t7T4o4U

Sundown is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's tenth original album, released in 1974 on the Reprise Records label. It reached #1 in the US on the pop chart, the only Lightfoot album to achieve this. In his native Canada, it topped the RPM 100 for five consecutive weeks, first hitting #1 on June 22, 1974, the same day it reached the top on the south of the border.

The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electronic instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track.

As for singles, the title track reached #1 on the pop and adult contemporary charts as well as #13 on the country chart, while "Carefree Highway" reached #10 on the pop chart, #1 on the AC chart and #81 on the country chart.

(Editing note: Fluppa was so impressed with Lightfoot that demands for more songs were issued. So here are four additional songs to round out the top five)
(Further editing note, from now my actual opinion will appear in bold and everything I rip from wiki will be regular, I don't want to deceive anyone)

The "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is a song written, composed, and performed by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot that describes the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
https://youtu.be/54kCX3K5Erc
This song was commissioned from Lightfoot by the CBC for a special broadcast on January 1, 1967, to start Canada's Centennial year. It appeared on Lightfoot's The Way I Feel album later in the same year along with the song "Crossroads," a shorter song of similar theme. While Lightfoot's song echoes the optimism of the railroad age, it also chronicles the cost in sweat and blood of building "an iron road runnin' from the sea to the sea." The slow middle section of the song is especially poignant, vividly describing the efforts and sorrows of the nameless and forgotten "navvies," whose manual labour actually built the railway.

This might be my favorite song by Lightfoot if not it's tied with "Early Morning Rain". Its liveliness has great appeal to me along with its story song aspect. Well, since I mentioned "Early Morning Rain" it has to make the list. I often sing this one in the morning when I am walking to school or if the day is overcast and drizzling.
Image
https://youtu.be/ZFJ5Bj_put0
It was released on Lightfoot, his debut album which although it was recorded in late 1964, the album was not released until January 1966 on the United Artists label.
Also off this album is the awesome song "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face". This is one of Lightfoot's happier love songs. Many of his romantic songs tend to be bittersweet and very down in the mouth https://youtu.be/qNAQMDs_Beg
Image
The final song comes off of Sit Down Young Stranger which was his sixth original album as well as his best-selling original album. It was released in 1970 on the Reprise Records label. The album was renamed "If You Could Read My Mind" shortly after release, after the song of that title reached number 1 on the RPM Top Singles chart in Canada and number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The album itself reached #12 on the Billboard 200 chart. "If You Could Read My Mind" was on the playlist right after "Sundown" on youtube, which prompted Fluppa to demand for more songs which I think is one of Lightfoot's best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqMG3VR5PP4

Wadsworth Mansion (also known as Wadsworth Family Mansion) was an early-1970s American rock band from Providence, Rhode Island. The group's members were Steve Jablecki (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Wayne Gagnon (guitar, vocals), Russ Sevigny (a/k/a Russ Dana, original drummer) Mike Jablecki (drums] and John Poole (bass guitar).

In November 1970, Wadsworth Mansion released their first single, a non-album version of "Sweet Mary", backed by another non-album track, "What's On Tonight". "Sweet Mary" would prove to be the band's only hit song peaking at #7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the week ending 27 February 1971. "Sweet Mary" would be their only charting hit, sealing their fate as a one hit wonder.
