The real trouble though is how we can go and switch all these measurement systems, but we haven't even come close to what we really need; English as the universal language.

It only sounds that way because Fahrenheit is smart.
Lopdo wrote:your argument with outside temperature is invalid. You don't really need finer scale than celsius offers to express how hot it is outside, even that is more than enough. If, for some reason you do need it, you can use decimals.

You are right that from "what feels more natural" they are equal, because it is all about what we grew up with. Both scales use arbitrary endpoints. The only important thing is that only one is standardized, used in science and practically everywhere.

Kelvin is based on Celsius, and I would say that it's much better for measuring extremely low temperatures than Rankine (based off Fahrenheit the same way). But who wants to use decimals all the time for normal day stuff? Add ten degrees and you go from comfortable temperature to extremely hot in Celsius. :D (Slight exaggeration, I know, but you get the point)

I've switched to the other systems you have though, like meters and liters and all that stuff, and I agree those are better.

No one needs to use decimals for normal day use of Celsius. It doesn't have to be that "accurate". And how does it affect anything if 10 degree change is the line between comfortable and hot? What does it matter?

Never have I in my life needed to express temperature in decimals, I rarely use individual degrees, multiplies of 5 are usually more than enough

that might a bit of an overstatement. I don't really care what language it will be, as long as it has reasonable number of characters (no accents and other crap, no kata, kanji or other asian stuff). English is most logical choice now, but that might change in few decades

Being an American, I use Fahrenheit when asked, but most of the work I have done in and out of school was in Celsius or Kelvin. The only times I see Fahrenheit used is when determining air temperature. Growing up with all three is very confusing, but I finally have the hang of things.

Personally, the same goes for Imperial versus Metric, I grew up with both.

Though I'd love for English to be universal, many people will be unwilling at first, but I do believe that it is possible. Just look at Star Trek and Doctor Who. Except, technically, in Star Trek, their communicators translate for them, so we can't be sure if every human speaks English, but the other races speak one language, why not us? As for Doctor Who, the TARDIS translates, so again, not universal.

What were we talking about again?

Can somebody who uses metric tell me something about that? Why do you use such a small unit as your base? Grams are so small... I still use them, but they are really small.

As for the English thing, English is used by people all around the world, it isn't represented by characters (like in Chinese), and it doesn't use weird accents on letters (like in Spanish).
