Says a moderator

I approve of government whenever it is both ethical and effective, though it has never and will never be perfect.

We're more like cops than politicians. (For the most part anyways.) As for your second point, I do believe that small-scale governments such as the current mod squad can fulfill both those roles. As such things get bigger, though, they're much more likely to have a rotten one in the bunch. Look what happenned when Fiendess went on a mod recruiting spree.

I don't trust people enough to be self-governing. I'm not exactly a fan of government either, but I do believe it does more good than harm, especially when you consider the alternatives.

Come on, you mean you wouldn't approve of me going 250kmh down the highway, throwing flaming cocktails out the window behind me, just because I feel like it?
Actually, that would be a miracle, because who'd pay for the highway's upkeep?

My opinion is based off of survival of the fittest. There are way too many incompetent people around and protecting them (in several ways) isn't going to do the human race any good. Also, freedom and the concept of government are contradictory. While governments reign, no one will be free, because they must live under their laws and give whatever is demanded like slaves.

"Most of current state and government tyranny is based on religion, traditions, cultural norms, laws, imperialism and wage labor. A very big portion of this crepe will instantly disappear in Anarchist societies, leading to much less abuse based on authority and control. Most people give up their freedom because they are scarred of state or they do not have courage to break traditions and religious restrictions. Societal taboos are other big organs of tyranny. Illusion that there is no replacement for government, and a society without government will be full of chaos is created and maintained by status quo. Authority of men over men is the most unnatural thing that exist in our societies, and is the biggest source of mess around us."

If there is no government, then who is going to stop a worse government from appearing?

Governments can only rise if they have power, and how can they have power if no one chooses to be their underlings. If they want to, then that's their problem.

They can use coercion to make other people become their underlings, and convince other people to use coercion on their behalf against others in exchange for power. It would not be difficult to imagine a makeshift feudal system.

It is often stated that it is bad that governments have a monopoly on coercion (in a sense). However, if they don't, then that means anyone can use coercion.

@Chris: You mean that if I have a bigger gun, or weapon, or better at violence, I magically won't be able to use it to force others to be my serfs? Gee, this anarchy thingy is a miracle worker.
