This shutdown is due to the disagreement over the ACA (Affordable Care Act) and neither party will budge (at present, that is). While the Republicans in the House refuse to sign any bill that will not delay the enactment of the ACA (though it started today), the Democrats in the Senate will refuse to sign anything altering the mandate. This led to hundreds of thousands of americans that work for the federal government to either be furloughed (temporary leave without pay) or they are at work and not getting paid for being there.
Sucks to suck, but the US political system is a mess.
EDIT: And because I work for the government, I'm currently furloughed.
The worst part is that there are enough republicans in the house willing to pass a bill to increase the debt ceiling without delaying the PPACA, but thanks to the Hastert rule that won't be allowed to happen.
