Shards did not deduct after buying 2nd upgrade

I was slowly and painstakingly gathering shards to get to 4,000 to get the 2nd slot upgrade. When I finally did (about 2-3 days ago) I had just over the needed amount (4,063 I believe).
I went and bought the 2nd slot upgrade and everything went through just fine. I was happy yet tired so I closed the game tab.
The next day, I logged back in to check that the upgrade hadn't mysteriously disappeared (as I remember was once the case with another player), and next thing I knew, I had BOTH the upgrade AND the shards (all 4,063 of them).
Thinking this was some sort of mistake, I attempted to buy a race I didn't own yet (to see if the shard amount would reset itself), and it worked! (Natives FTW)
I ended up buying the 2nd upgrade, and 2 races for the price of 4,000 shards!
Now as I wrote in the beginning of the post, this is allegedly a good bug (for us users) and a bad one (for Lopdo, for obvious reasons).
I didn't clean the cookies or history of my browser (Firefox 11.0), nor did I change anything in my system configuration between the 2 playing sessions, and no - I did not hack either.
I don't know or think that this particular number of shards was the culprit, and I'm not even sure if this was indeed the exact number of shards I had.
