Yes, to reproduce, birds "do it". The eggs already exist in a basic form inside the female, just like with humans. When the sperm reaches the egg, after mating, it will fertilize the egg and cause the hard shell to form. Whether the preformed egg is fertilized or not, the egg will still be released. The reason you might think otherwise is because a chicken's egg (as well as some other bird's eggs), develop the shell anyway. The eggs you eat from the supermarket are unfertilized, unless you live in certain parts of the world, in which case you eat the undeveloped baby chick as added flavor.
